Stop Buying 4GB RAM Smartphones in 2026. Here is why.

The 4GB Scam: Your 2026 Phone is Already Obsolete

Let’s be real—4GB of RAM just doesn’t cut it in smartphones anymore. If you want things to run smoothly, you’re out of luck. Phone companies know this perfectly well, yet they keep bringing out these 4GB models anyway.

Certainly, it results in a poor experience and a surge of negative reviews, but do they appear concerned? Not quite. Let's explore why 4GB is essentially useless today, why major brands like Samsung continue to support it, and what actions you should take.

Why 4GB RAM just isn't enough anymore

First off, a quick refresher: RAM is your phone’s "working memory." It handles the apps you have open, your background processes, and the UI itself. To stay fast, your phone needs "breathing room"—free space to juggle tasks.

Back in the day, Android and its apps were light (around 2GB or less). You had 2GB left over, and life was good. Fast forward to 2026, and the UI has become a beast. Even Google is now telling 4GB users to run "Android Go" (the "lite" version) because the standard Android 16 is just too heavy.

Take my Samsung M17, for example. I have the 6GB version. I checked my settings today: One UI 8.0 and a few background apps are already eating up 4.2GB. I only have 1.8GB free.  Think about that. If I had bought the 4GB variant, I’d be in the negative. My phone would be constantly freezing just to open the camera. I did my research and dodged a bullet, but most people don't know this.

Why Brands won't let the 4GB variant vanish

Trust me, they know. But they have two big reasons to keep the 4GB variants alive:

  1. The RAM Price Crisis: RAM prices have shot up 40-50% lately. Why? Because the world is obsessed with AI. Every time someone asks an AI to write a summary, it uses servers packed with RAM. Manufacturers are raising up prices because of that massive demand from the AI giants. To keep budget phones profitable, manufacturers are cost-cutting—and your RAM is the first thing to go.

  2. The "Best Under 15k" Badge: This is pure marketing. To win the title of "Best Phone Under 15k," they need a price tag that starts at ₹14,999. They use the 4GB model to hit that price for the ads, even if the 6GB or 8GB versions (the ones you actually want) are way more expensive.

It’s exactly like the "Small Popcorn" trick at the movies. The small size is only there to make the medium and large look like a better deal. It’s a decoy.

What you should do

There’s no "one size fits all," but if you're buying a phone in 2026, 6GB is the floor. 4GB is a gamble you’re probably going to lose. Make sure to check the reviews on Amazon or YouTube before you buy. If you see people complaining about "UI lag" or "keyboard delay," run the other way. As software gets heavier, that 4GB phone is only going to get worse.
