Mumbai Metro - Line 9 and 2B Phase 1 Launch; Line 2A separates.

Mumbai Metro Line 2B and 9 Phase 1 Launch, Line 2A separates

Overview:

Starting from 8th of April 2026, Line 9 and Line 2B will begin their Phase 1 operations. Also Line 2A will no longer be connected to Line 7, So commuters wishing to travel between these lines will have to switch at the Dahisar (East) Station. Also Line 9 has been merged with Line 7, so metro services will run between Kashigaon in Mira Bhayandar to Gundavali. Read our Blog to understand everything about these changes.

Line 2A and 7 Decoupling

Line 2A and Line 7 Decoupling:

Why they were coupled:

Since January of 2023, when both Line 2A and Line 7 were fully operational, they were coupled to ensure seamless operations. This was done as the Depot for the Red Line (Line 7) was not yet ready, which was the Uttan Depot (Now scrapped). Due to this the Red Line rakes (Metro Trains) were maintained and parked at the Charkop Depot (In Kandivali West).

Since Charkop Depot is on the Yellow Line (Line 2A), it was decided to couple Lines 2A and 7 to ensure efficient operations and commuter convenience. However, this was only temporary and many of us knew that these lines would one day be decoupled once Red Line got its own Depot and other lines start their operations.

Now as Line 9 begins operations tomorrow, to ensure commuter convenience and efficient operations, the decision to connect Lines 7 and 9 was made as expected. Line 9 will also utilize the Charkop Depot since no other depot is available. Once Line 2B connects to Line 2A, the Mandale Depot will lighten the burden of the Charkop Depot facility.

What you need to know:

Now since Line 2A and Line 7 are now decoupled, Commuters wanting to switch between Line 7,9 and Line 2A must do so at the Dahisar (East) Metro Station. The switch is simple, since both the stations (With the same name) are connected. You walk through the paid area of one station to the other. No need to exit out, or repeat security checks.

This seamless switch over is mainly possible due to the operator being same, i.e. MMMOCL (Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited), Unlike Line 1 and Line 7 connections where the operators are different. Hence you will be able to book tickets between stations on Line 2A, 7 and 9. You will enter at your source and exit at your final destination, no in-between exits.

Also, the NCMC Cards will still be usable on these lines seamlessly, especially my favourite- the Pine Labs BharatYatra. Check out the Blog here. Another good thing is that, Line 2A is now independent, so wait times will be significantly reduced. Also, if any snag affects Line 7 or Line 9, Line 2A remains unaffected.

As discussed, Line 7 and 9 will also be coupled. Thus, now trains will operate from Gundavali directly to Kashigaon in Mira Bhayandar and back. Commuters who wish to switch to Line 2A shall deboard at Dahisar (East) station. The Stations in Line 9 Phase 1 are as follows:

Line 2B Phase 1 Starts:

Line 2B Phase 1 will also begin operations, which starts from Mandale to Diamond Gardens. Yes, Line 2A and 2B are not yet connected since the stretch from Diamond Garden to Andheri West is under construction. The stations in Line 2B Phase 1 are as follows:

  1. Maharastra Nagar - Mandale

  2. Mankhurd - Interchange with Harbour Line

  3. Deonar

  4. Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk

  5. Deshbhakt N.G. Acharya Udyan - Diamond Gardens

It is also important to note that the Mankhurd Metro Station is connected to Mankhurd Station on the Harbour Line which would benefit commuters travelling from Vashi/Panvel.

Conclusion:

Well, Line 2B and 9 Phase 1 starting finally and Line 2A being separated marks a major milestone for the Mumbai Metro. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also announced that Mumbai’s operational metro network has crossed the 100 km mark. This makes Mumbai the second-largest metro network in India after Delhi. I am really happy that the Mumbai Metro Network is growing, I hope you all have a smooth and comfortable commute.
