Why Spotify is better in India than in the USA

Updated: Jan 30

Overview:

If we take a look at the Spotify in USA, it has many restrictions if you don't have a Premium Subscriptions. On the other hand, India doesn't have any such extra restrictions other than the ones currently present (At the time of this article being posted). Read ahead to know more.

Differences:

So, in India the only restrictions if we don't have Premium are:

  1. Ads

  2. Not able to download songs

  3. Group Streaming.

Most of us are okay with these restrictions as it's not such a big deal. Even though Premium is quite affordable in India, still few are using Spotify Modded Applications which may contain harmful Malware.

The restrictions on Spotify in the USA are much tougher:

  1. Being able to skip songs only 6 times for each hour.

  2. Every album and playlist played is shuffled.

  3. Repeat individual songs within a playlist.

Ads, Downloads and Group Streaming are of course present too. So overall this makes the experience for US Spotify users much annoying and restricted. You can note the differences from the premium subscription pages as shown in the pictures.

Conclusion:

If these restrictions were applied to India, the users with premium would have no issue, while those without would be annoyed and would increase usage of Modded applications as they are easily available. Well Spotify has a reason to implement stricter restrictions and that is - to force users to switch to Premium.

Usually, platforms release restrictions at the start to allow faster adoption, but as the platform grows and gains a proper user base, Companies are more focused on generating monetary income from that user base. Although when applying higher restrictions there must be enough reason for a user to upgrade to premium, otherwise it will backfire.
