Overview

The full filmography of the renowned filmmaker and novelist Makoto Shinkai is finally making its way to Crunchyroll for Indian viewers. This massive, official collection release is a huge victory for the Indian anime community, allowing fans to finally stream his spectacular works legally and easily. Read on for the full rollout schedule and the incredible story of how fan power made this moment happen.

The Release Roadmap

Crunchyroll made this announcement on their India YouTube channel with a special video message by Makoto Shinkai himself. Three of his movies are already streaming, with more to come soon (refer to the timeline above). Crucially, this rollout includes Hindi dubs for major titles like Suzume, Weathering With You, and Your Name., a significant step that shows global platforms are finally recognizing the scale of the Indian audience.

Where it all began

Shinkai's film release in India started when his 2019 film Weathering with you was set to have a global release, however India was excluded. This led to a petition being filed online by Indian Anime fans asking for the film to be screened in India too with the hashtag - #indiawantsanime. The petition ended up getting more than 50,000 signatures and lot of online presence after which Makoto Shinkai himself acknowledged the petition on his twitter account stating - "I would be very happy if I could release Tenki no ko (Weathering With You) in India. I'm going to talk to our Japanese distribution company."¹

Weathering With You was officially released by PVR and BookmyShow in India on October 11, 2019, across 20 major cities² (including Mumbai and Delhi) making it the first original Japanese animated film to be screened for the general audience in India, officially moving anime beyond film festivals and niche screenings. This film was a success, with its opening weekend raking in ₹6.6 million and ultimately collecting over ₹12.5 million, witnessing the biggest opening for a foreign-language film in India at the time. This momentum established India as a serious market, leading to the high-profile releases that followed.

Followed this came the grand release of Suzume with the director Shinkai at Citi Mall, Andheri (W), Mumbai. The film was released in PVR by the Japan Foundation (New Delhi). At this screening, fans had a lucky chance to meet Shinkai himself and have a Q&A session³.

Later, as part of a collaboration between PVR Pictures, the Japan Foundation, and CoMix Wave Films, the Makoto Shinkai Film Festival took place in April 2023. This festival showcased five of his films and it received a very positive response, demonstrating that there is a love for anime in India as well.

Despite the films' successful theatrical run, they were not released for streaming in India. While it was possible to subscribe to Crunchyroll, use a VPN, and watch them legally, many fans were unlikely to go through such hassle. Instead, they might resort to other methods of viewing, which, while easy, can be detrimental to the creators.

Therefore, I'm pleased that these films are finally being released for streaming in India, Crunchyroll's aggressive local pricing also makes anime significantly more accessible for us. [Click here for our full analysis on why Crunchyroll is cutting its prices in India!]

Final Verdict - The Mainstream Moment Anime Fans Deserve

It’s fantastic that Makoto Shinkai consistently recognizes the passion and size of the Anime community in India. The shift from a massive fan petition for a single theatrical release to having his entire catalogue legally available on streaming in just a few years is a powerful testament to the community's growth.

In the Crunchyroll video, he mentioned he spent all of 2024 working on his next film and plans to make a formal announcement sometime in 2025. Early speculation hints it might be a shift towards a pure sci-fi setting, making the anticipation even higher! I'm eagerly anticipating his new project, and in the meantime, I'll definitely be revisiting his earlier films on Crunchyroll.
