Good Phone by Lava under 10k

Overview:

Lava has made a significant impact in the budget smartphone market with the launch of the Lava Storm Play 5G, priced under 10K. This device features the world's first MediaTek Dimensity 7060 processor, offering enhanced performance and efficiency, positioning Lava at the forefront of innovation in the Indian smartphone industry. Read more to know.

Specifications:

Design and Build:

The design is quite simple yet elegant. The back and frame are made of polycarbonate. The phone is available in 2 colour options - Frosty Blue and Dune Titanium. As usual, the buttons are on the right, and the SIM tray is on the left. The power button also doubles as a fingerprint sensor. The USB Type-C port, microphone, 3.5mm jack, and the speaker grille are all on the bottom. It is to be noted that there is no secondary noise-cancellation microphone. The phone is IP64 certified and is resistant to dust and water.

Processor and RAM-ROM:

This is where this phone stands out the most. The phone comes with the new Dimensity 7060 processor paired with fast LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The combination of RAM and ROM is quite powerful and rarely found in this segment. The phone only has one variant that comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM. The phone has a good price-to-performance ratio and can handle day-to-day usage and decent gaming. Its AnTuTu score is about 5 lakhs and can handle BGMI at 40 FPS.

Display:

The phone has a 6.75-inch HD+ IPS LCD display and has a refresh rate of 120Hz. It has a 83.4% screen-to-body ratio (Approximate). We feel it would be much better if Lava had instead used an FHD+ display, which is now becoming more common in this segment. The display comes with a water-drop notch; we feel a punch-hole would be much better. The display has a maximum brightness of 750 nits and is visible both indoors and outdoors. The display is Widevine L3 certified.

Software:

The software is clean and based on Stock Android version 15. Lava has promised only 1 year of major updates (Android 16) along with 2 years of security updates. It would be much better if Lava provided more than this, as nowadays major brands often provide at least 2 years of major updates. The UI will feel snappy thanks to the processor and RAM-ROM selection.

The phone has all the special features anyone would expect from an Android phone, be it app lock, app cloning, screen recording, etc. The phone comes with 2 dialer applications, one by Google and the other by Lava. The one by Lava provides call recording without any announcement.

Camera:

The phone's rear camera setup consists of a 50MP main camera along with a 2MP depth sensor. The selfie camera is 8MP. The camera app is quite feature-rich and has plenty of features you can play with, such as time-lapse, slow motion, AI emoji, dual-view mode, group photo, document correction, and much more. Tech creator Trakin Tech states that the photos appear more saturated in daylight conditions, making the pictures have punchy colors. The camera needs improvements and optimization with the hardware, stated tech creator Gyan Therapy. So overall, the camera is decent but needs improvements.

Battery and Charging:

The phone is equipped with a 5000mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging. It takes 120 minutes (2 hours) to charge from 0% to 100%. The device offers a talk time of 31 hours, standby time of 471 hours, and YouTube playback time of 10.6 hours. Generally, the battery should last about a day or more with typical use.

Other:

The phone has a mono speaker and not stereo. The 3.5mm jack is present, and the SIM card tray is a hybrid, so either 2 SIM cards or 1 SIM card along with a microSD card can be used. For connectivity, the phone has the vital 12 5G bands, VoNR, carrier aggregation (4G+), dual-band Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5.2. It has all the required sensors, including a gyroscope.

Brand Support:

Now comes one of the most important things to know when buying any phone: the after-sales service. There is less worry as Lava has become a trusted brand, as they have always been transparent about their service. Whenever you buy a Lava phone, you get a card in the box stating that you get FREE service at home when your phone is under warranty, and that too within 24 hours. This service is chargeable in case the phone is out of warranty.

Their service is prompt and has been tested by Tech Creator Gyan Therapy. Lava also provides the parts list and prices, and labor charges all on their website, ensuring transparency among customers. Overall, Lava's service can be trusted.

Final Verdict:

Overall, this is a good smartphone in the under 10K segment, particularly due to its processor and RAM-ROM combination. The display is adequate, though a Full HD display would be preferable. The software is clean but only offers 1 year of major updates. There have been no issues with the battery and connectivity so far, but the camera could use some improvements.

We rate this phone 3.5 out of 5. It has a great processor, RAM-ROM, and software. The camera, display, and battery are decent. This phone is recommended for general and casual users seeking a good option under 10K.

My suggestions to Lava for their next model would be to improve the camera optimization, a Full-HD display and 2 years of Major updates, then nothing stops from me giving a phone a 5 out of 5 in this price range.
